Concert – A Nice Dilemma and Trial by Jury (July 2017)

Astwood Bank Operatic Society are pleased to announce our forthcoming concert in July will be A Nice Dilemma with music by Gilbert and Sullivan, libretto and arragement by Mary Dhonau!

Synopsis

Astwood Bank Operatic Society will be joined by some of the best soloists in the County, in a semi-staged concert of Gilbert & Sullivan classics and a complete performance of “Trial by Jury”. The two concerts will take place in the Church of St George & St Matthias in Astwood Bank on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd July at 7.30pm. The first half of the evening is a romp through the G&S operettas in a piece compiled by Mary Dhonau entitled “A Nice Dilemma”, a prequel to “Trial by Jury”.

The Usher of the Court is in a dilemma. However, with the assistance of several well-known characters, he completes the 12-man Jury in order to try a breach of promise of marriage, between Edwin the mischievous Defendant and the beautiful Angelina. We will be visited by the fairies from “Iolanthe”, Mad Margaret and Rose Maybud from “Ruddigore”, the Pirate King and Major General Stanley from “The Pirates of Penzance”; as well as Buttercup and Captain Corcoran from “HMS Pinafore”. Several school girls from “The Mikado” and “Princess Ida” add to the confusion with some hilarious results!

The creative team is led by sisters, Helen Deakin and Eleanor Peberdy. Helen makes her debut as Musical Director with Astwood Bank Operatic, but is no stranger to the topsy turvy world of Gilbert & Sullivan. Eleanor, who has appeared on stage with the society many times since she joined in 2009, is delighted to be producing and directing the company for the first time.

A principal line up of past, present and new soloists joins forces with a strong chorus to bring the delights of Victorian satire to the village of Astwood Bank.
